The Calm Kids Collective

Tools and Techniques to Calm the Busy Minds of Children and Young People

In this fast-paced modern world, it’s easy for young minds to become overwhelmed, over-stimulated, and dysregulated.

Mindfulness practices can be a vital tool in helping children and young people manage stress, emotionally regulate, and self-soothe in healthy ways. As a result, this helps foster a calm, clear, and focused mind.

Children and young people who engage in mindfulness practices show evidence of improvements in attention; leading to better academic performance, improved communication skills, and more positive engagement in social interactions

Mindfulness in the Modern World

Mindfulness also allows young minds to observe their thoughts and emotions without reacting impulsively. Instead, finding ways that create breathing space that allows them to calm their mind and respond to their feelings in a controlled way.

Not only this, but mindfulness practice can also increase positive behaviour, boost confidence, self-esteem, and build emotional resilience. As a result, enhancing the overall well-being of children and young people, providing them with useful tools to navigate the world around them.

There are various enjoyable activities that can be used to weave the principles of mindfulness into the engagement of play; creating a connection to the present moment and expanding awareness to self and others. Such activities may include the following:

  • Breathing exercises such as blowing bubbles, tracing shapes using the breath, body-scan meditations, yoga stretches, and passing a ball from left-to-right in each hand as they breathe in and out.

  • Sensory walks in nature to engage them in the world around them; feeling the earth beneath their feet, the sound of birds, and the smell of grass, leaves, or flowers.

  • Mindful movement exercises such as dancing to music to safely engage with the various parts of the body, explore, and express felt sensations, and vibrations in the body. Dancing is also a great way to relieve stress, and use pent-up energy, soothing or stimulating the individual. As a result, bringing the body back to homeostasis.

As well as this, there are also:

  • Guided story meditations whereby the young person is guided through a story to a peaceful place where they feel calm and relaxed. They are encouraged to imagine themself in this environment, using their senses such as what they see, feel, hear, taste, and smell when they are in this space of calm and relaxation.

  • Mindful arts and crafts; focusing on the various colours, patterns, shapes, textures, and the sensations of the crayon, paintbrush, or pencil upon the paper. As well as getting in touch with their thoughts, feelings, and emotions, and how these can be expressed, explored, and communicated externally in a non-verbal way through the use of colour and movement.

With tools and techniques to regulate and calm the body and mind, you can equip the children and young people in your care to have a restful and restorative night’s sleep. As a result, they will be ready to incorporate and integrate their learning, grow as an individual, and reach their full potential in a way that feels safe and manageable for them.
